Head Start is a federally funded program created to promote the school readiness of children from low-income families through local programs. The Head Start program is authorized by the “Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act of 2007.”

The District offers both Head Start and Early Head Start programs that support the mental, social, and emotional development of children from birth to age five. Head Start classes are located at the ten school sites listed in the green column and limited Early Head Start classes are located at Village Academy and Highland Elementary School. Classes are offered year-round for 10 hours per day for working families. Blended funding supports the ten-hour day and age-eligible children are required to obtain a VPK Certificate of Eligibility.

Family and Community Support Specialists (FACES) are located at each school site to help enroll children in the program and support families and their children after enrollment. Head Start teaching teams are comprised of certified, degreed or credentialed teachers and practitioners. Programs use Creative Curriculum, which is supported by ongoing child progress monitoring tools to ensure students master the Head Start Performance Standards and the Florida VPK Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four-Year-Olds (2011). All classrooms use the Conscious Discipline framework to promote the development of self-regulation and other social/emotional skills in children.

Head Start encourages the role of parents as their children’s first and most important teachers. The program is offered as a ten-hour day and in addition to educational services, the program provides children and their families with health, mental health, nutrition, social, and other benefits. Head Start services are responsive to individual child and family ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage.
